Some changes in the highway, such as new zebra/pelican crossings and road humps need a formal notice procedure. This is controlled by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and the Highways Act 1980.
When these changes are proposed, we post the details on this webpage and in the newspaper.
We can still consult on proposed works to roads that are not in a formal process, when:
- Local people are directly affected;
- such as footway widening or pedestrian crossing refuges
Information on proposals is normally sent to those directly affected and we ask for their views. When we get comments/complaints, we consider if they are relevant and if they can be included in the scheme.

What happens next?
After a formal consultation, all responses (support, objection or comments) are carefully looked at. We will consider their content, after which, a scheme will:
- Progress as advertised.
- Be amended.
- Be withdrawn.
Everyone who has commented will be written to once a decision has been made, with reasons for the decision.
